Guest posts or Guest Blogging

What is Guest Posting

Neil Patel : Guest posts or guest posting is publishing and article on someone else’s website. And people do this so they can get more brand awareness and traffic back to their own website (also known as referral traffic).

Important Things to Remember About Guest Posts :

  • Guest posts must be well-written. Search engines are beginning to get choosy, and people are too.
  • Posts need to be on-topic. People must want to read them to get maximum value. You don’t want people coming to your post and then clicking back to search results because the posts are irrelevant, as bounces can devalue your post in Google.
  • People should want to share your posts using social media. Sharing increases readership. In reputation marketing, social media sharing helps spread the word.
  • Outbound links you place in your posts must be helpful and relevant to the article. Make sure that the anchor text over the links is accurate.
  • Don’t post on sites that post a lot of guest content because the links are pretty much useless.

Guest posting is great for search engines

The one non-negotiable you should have for guest-posting is this:

Jeff Goins : The host blogger must include a link to your blog in the post somewhere (usually at the beginning or end).

Over time, these backlinks will raise the value of your blog to search engines, making your content easier to find via Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others.

Why Is Guest Blogging Important For Your Business?

Guest blogging offers a number of benefits for any business. By sharing your expertise on other companies’ websites, you can establish yourself as an authority figure within your market, build relationships with other thought leaders in your field and expose your brand to an entirely new audience.

Additionally, featuring guest posts on your own blog will help you deliver new perspectives and fresh content to your audience. We’re all guilty of falling victim to a routine and growing tired of the same old stuff, so featuring guest posts is a great way to keep readers engaged — not to mention the promotional boost that occurs when your guest bloggers share their blogs with their personal networks.

Some blogs, like OpenView, source the majority of their content from other leaders in their industry. Even if you don’t have the resources to stick to a robust blogging cadence, guest bloggers can help you offer new content to your readers without much additional time and effort needed by your team.

Benefits of Guest Blogging

  • Build a profile as an industry expert/thought leader
  • Grow your personal brand
  • Grow an audience (social followers, subscribers etc.)
  • Improve SEO performance
  • Build authoritative backlinks
  • Build relationships and drive new partnerships e.g. co-marketing partnerships, job offers
  • Drive referral traffic
  • Improve a company’s brand awareness
  • Get more leads, users and even customers

Guest Blogging Outreach

The best way to land guest post opportunities is by showing bloggers that you’ll provide a ton of value to their audience (and them)—and better yet, you’ll hand it all over on a silver platter.

Scribe : The first part of your outreach should establish that you’re a fan of the blog
Instead of leading with a boilerplate statement, show them you’re impressed by their content and that you’ve been following them for a while.
Whatever you do, make sure it sounds sincere.

CUSTOMIZE EACH OUTREACH EMAIL

Your content strategy can’t rely on a one-size-fits-all approach. Don’t send the same template email to every site you pitch. Make sure to tailor all of your pitch emails to the specific person (and site). Also, be sure to include the person’s name (and the name of the site) as well as a reason why your pitch should be considered.

BE GENUINE

Attempt to make an actual connection with whoever you’re contacting. Keep in mind, there is a human behind that site as much as there is behind yours, and regardless of whether their blog is bigger than yours, we’re all human at the end of the day. Be yourself and be clear about what you want from them. When it comes to effective outreach, people are more receptive than you may think.

Lastly, don’t spam your prospects. Create a spreadsheet or other tracking document and note all of your follow-ups. Try following up once or twice, and if they don’t respond then simply cross them off your list.

Find guest blogging opportunities

Once you have a place to keep your data organized, start searching for websites in your niche that accept guest posts. Depending on how established your company is, you might look for a broader set of sites or only focus on your specific audience. Just keep in mind that a backlink from a relevant site carries more weight than a backlink from one that isn’t.

Here’s a list of strings I’ve used on Google to find guest posting opportunities:

  • Your keyword + “guest post by”
  • Your keyword + “guest post”
  • Your keyword + “write for us”
  • Your keyword + “guest article”
  • Your keyword + “contributing writer”
  • Your keyword + “contribute to our site”

You can also reverse engineer your competitors’ backlinks. Using tools like the free backlink checker on Ahrefs, you just enter your competitor’s website URL, and you’ll get a list of all the websites that have linked back to them.
Now, not all of those backlinks will have come from guest posts, but if your competitor was able to get links from these websites, it means they might be a good fit for your content.

One other tip: make sure you understand the difference between do-follow and no-follow links, and do your research about which one the publication offers (you can look at previous guest posts on their site to find out). No-follows shouldn’t be a dealbreaker, but they aren’t as valuable as do-follows.

How do you write a guest post?

  • Request editorial guidelines from the publisher. We do this to ensure we meet their expectations and don’t have to revise and edit our guest posts.
  • Choose a topic that naturally fits with our target website. This allows us to naturally build in our client’s link and anchor text. The operative word here is naturally. Nothing about a guest post should seem forced or unnatural.
  • Write a post that is high-quality. This means going to some effort to engage a native english speaking writer who can craft a compelling article that is at least 700 words long and reads well.
  • Build in other natural links and add images. To make the guest post appear as real as possible we always build in two relevant internal links and at least one high-authority and non-commercial link (i.e. a link to a major news
  • publication like The Washington Post). We also add at least one copyright free image.

Conclousion

Guest blogging can offer benefits for all involved, especially when the arrangement is reciprocal. Guest blogs can really help your marketing department as they have something new and educational that they can use in any campaigns or social media posts. It’s also great for the writers, since it provides access to a new audience and a chance to get your business noticed. By understanding the role of guest blogs, and following the best practices, you’ll be able to reap the many benefits and position yourself as an expert in your field.
