Miss Kansas winner shares mission to protect Americans from domestic abuse

In an interview with ABC Alexis Smith shared how she survived an emotionally abusive relationship, and as she took the crown she encouraged others to seek help.

The newly-crowned Miss Kansas who called out her abusive ex-boyfriend during the pageant did so in a bid to help empower other survivors of domestic violence, she has revealed.

Alexis Smith went viral last week after she posted a video from the interview portion of last month’s Miss Kansas pageant in which she disclosed that her own abuser was sitting in the competition audience.

Smith said that moment and moving forward is about turning her “pain into purpose” and using her story to help end all unhealthy relationships.

“My voice and advocacy will empower everyone to reclaim their own power in their own unique way,” Smith said. “I might be small in stature, but I stand tall in strength, purpose, and power with hopes of inspiring others to do the same.”
